MTA head to retire in September

MTA Executive Director Peter Mills announced at the organization’s last board meeting that he will not seek renewal of his contract when it expires this fall. Mr. Mills is a Navy veteran, and was a respected state senator before being appointed to the position in 2011. We thank him for his service to our state and country.

Also, the MTA’s board has one vacancy set aside for an Androscoggin County resident, and the chairman, Daniel Wathen, is working on an expired term as well.

The Board voted to elevate current COO Peter Merfeld to the post of Interim CEO when Peter Mills steps aside. Merfeld has worked his whole career at the MTA.

There’s a lot of new leadership coming to the MTA. Transitions are an ideal time to take a fresh look at previous decisions. We encourage the Governor and MTA board to start with the financially risky and deeply unpopular Gorham Connector proposal.
